This is a blog meant to highlight things going on around town, and the first topic is going to be the big event for this weekend–the Battle on the Bay. Starting on Friday night, when the racing boats (and, I understand, antique wooden boats as well) will be lining Main Street, until Sunday, when the last lap is completed, boats, boats, and more boats are going to be what Patchogue is all about.

Click here for info about Battle on the Bay.

However, did you know that Patchogue has a long history of boating? Gil Smith had a boat building business on the Patchogue River and built cat boats–used for racing on the bay by the well-to-do and were considered to be highly desirable. In fact, if you visit Meadow Croft in Bayport, there is a picture of the Roosevelt family and Mr. Smith in one of his cat boats in the foyer as you enter the house. Several wooden boat builders have recently come out with new models based on the Gil Smith cat boat, including one manufacturer who even named their model “The Patchogue”.

Where there are boats, there are also marinas (goes to figure, right?). From the Off Key Tikki and Harbor Crab with their vibrant nightlife, to the more traditional marinas like Weeks Yacht Yard with its old buildings and maritime charm, they’re worth checking out.

Well, enough for one post, and I’m tired so that’s it for tonight…I’ll see you at the boat races!
